Fatal Shooting Outside Buckeye Bingo

A fatal shooting took place this past Wednesday, August 3rd, just outside of Buckeye Bingo in Waco, Texas. The man who was shot and killed has been identified as, 35 year-old, Juan Marcus Howard. An altercation was initiated by Howard, when he began attacking an armed security officer in the back parking lot of the property.

During the quarrel, Howard attempted to reach for the officer’s gun, resulting in the officer being shot in his left hand. Following this, the licensed officer then fatally shot Howard in the upper torso. According to Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton, ‘Anytime you try and grab an officer’s gun, we can assume you are going to try and kill us with it. Detectives will have to try and explain why they labeled it as an attempted capital-murder case, but… we are getting a much clearer picture as to what (the suspect’s) intentions were.’

While the Waco Police Department did not release the name of the officer involved in the shooting due to his role as a witness in the case, the officer has been identified as Jimmy Parker, a name released by non-profit organization, The Security Officer’s Brotherhood, per the permission of the officer’s family. The organization has announced its intent to award the officer with the Purple Shield award, which is dependent upon the outcome of the investigation that is currently ongoing.

The Purple Shield award is given to officers receiving wounds as a result of a severe, criminal situation leading to medical attention from a certified EMT, up to and including death.
